The design idea is to reproduce the typical Piazza, the preeminent Italian public space. The main feature is in the floor tile mosaic, which reveals the giant-scaled image of a traditional tile. On two sides of the area, mirrors create a quadruple image of the floor, thus recreating the traditional tile-made pattern. The tiles itself would be laid by different Italian companies, bringing one step further the concept of this ‘Italian mosaic’. The second feature of the space is a series of cross-vaults made of fabric and metal, as a reminiscence of the archetypical arcade common in all piazzas. The cross-vaults have the double function of being a marquee for the pavilion and sheds for the tables. The facilities of the café and the information point are placed along one side of the pavilion, thus leaving the majority of the space free for spectacles and representations.
