LA BIENALLE DI VENEZIA
NATIONAL PARTICIPATION IN VENICE BIENNALE
The brief
Curation and Design of the greek pavilion in the 10th biennale of architecture in Venice, under the theme ‘Cities, architecture and Society’.La Biennale di Venezia
10th International Exhibition if Architecture
Greek Pavilion, Giardini Venice
September 2006
The starting point of our approach to the theme ‘Cities, Architecture and Society’ was the hypothesis that the islands of the Aegean Archipelago function together as a city. This idea comes from the writer Angelos Elephantis, who illustrated a portrait of this city in one of his articles and described the ships’ decks as piazzas where a diverse crowd of people congregates. The main element of the exhibition was a platform that was placed in the centre of the Greek pavilion. Laying on springs, the platform moved when people stepped on it, recreating the sense of imbalance that one has on a ship’s deck sailing through the archipelago. Just as the ships’ decks encourage the communication among passengers, the platform also encourages the mingling of the diverse crowd of the Biennale visitors, resulting to a game in which many people could participate experiencing a pleasant feeling.
