GLASS RIBBON
TULLAMORE ART CENTER
The brief
The competition brief called for the design of a distinctive municipal building of contemporary architecture.Tullamore, Republic of Ireland
March 2011
The visionary programmatic requirement is making ‘a community building in the fullest sense’. A prominent single storey transparent building, a glass ribbon with gradual increase of height, is situated on the east side of the proposed site with its main entrance by an adjacent plaza, created on its north-east side. The glass walls blur the boundaries between inside and outside enabling visitor’s visual contact with the park, the plaza, the human activities, and the art, at all times. The unobstructed flow of movement unfolds views to the park and the surrounding environment as one walks through the building. The glass ribbon also works on a symbolic level; it functions as an embrace keeping the community united by encouraging openness and collaboration between different creative fields.
