STASIS
7th THESSALONIKI BIENNALE OF CONTEMPORARY ART
The brief
7th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art
Thessaloniki / Athens
2019
Inspired by the theme of the 7th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, Stasis / Taking a Stance, the exhibition’s architectural installation attempts to actuate a space of dialogue between the artworks and a landscape of punctuations and literal and conceptual stasis points. Dispersed throughout the museums are three types of constructions/objects, which serve a corresponding number of functions. All objects comprise a system that alters the visitor’s relation to the exhibited artworks.
Being non-artistic works, the architectural structures at the exhibition spaces of the 7th Biennale can be interpreted as reference points, as points of stasis, and as the starting points for charting multiple alternative courses among the artworks.
The objects comprising the architectural installation are the seat, the podium and the column, each corresponding to a specific function: observation, orientation, and information respectively. They are all points in space that engage in a morphological and conceptual dialogue with the visual identity of the 7th Biennale.
We understand the imperative of the 7th Biennale, stasis, as an urgent need to suspend our current habitual meandering through information paths. If stasis is a prerequisite of reflection, the system established by the architectural installation in the exhibition areas of the 7th Biennale aspires to serve as a kind of reflection generator.
